BBS GSA 2015-2016 Yearly Review
It has been another fun year for the BBSGSA! This year
has been incredibly successful due to a huge turnout
from students throughout the department! We have
continued the very popular BBSGSA coffee houses and
introduced even more social events including Board
Game Nights! We are glad to say that these events have
been very well attended, and have been great for meeting
people in different labs! While it’s always great to meet
new people and make new friends, it’s also lots of fun
(or even more fun?) to compete against your friends for
bragging rights! For example, in past years, the BBSGSA
coordinated a few events for some friendly competition.
• Succeeding the Wright
Lab who won the Emma
Griffiths Spirit award for
the 2014-2015 year, the
Coombes Lab clinched the
award (and bragging rights)
for the 2015-2016 year.
Halloween is always a
fantastic event for the BBSGSA with lots of labs coming
out and getting into the Halloween spirit with our
costume and pumpkin carving competition. This year,
the Li Lab held their title for Best Group Costume, and
Surette Lab took home the prize for Best Pumpkin with
an intricately carved E. T.
• Best Group Costume: Li Lab as cowboy-themed
• Best Individual Costume: Pat Schenck (again) with a clever
interpretation of “Ice Cube”!
• Surette Lab wins Best Pumpkin!
This year’s Christmas events included the Annual
Departmental Potluck and a Gingerbread House
Competition. Like always, all the cooks outdid themselves,
and everyone was treated to a wonderful meal. Attendees
were even treated to delicious hams cooked and served
by Brian Tuinema from the Coombes Lab! The department
did a great job raising money for Hamilton Food Share.
• The Li Lab took home the prize for their French-themed
Gingerbread House, showing off their artistically gifted
This spring, we again had the BBSGSA Spring Cleaning
clothing drive. We were able to collect over 800 items of
clothing, with the Burrows Lab donating the most with
a staggering 66 items per person! We also organized a
very successful Bowling Night where things got quite
competitive! BUT, everyone’s competitive spirits really
came out during the Biochemistry Olympics at the Annual
Departmental Picnic, even the PI’s came out in 2nd place!
